Bundesliga 2 - No Schalke future for Fährmann
FC Schalke 04 conducted the first training session of the upcoming 2. Bundesliga season on the pitch, with some surprising personnel changes. On Wednesday, trainer Karel Geraerts welcomed 27 players after two days of medical checks. Moussa Sylla was not present due to national team duties. The club had only announced his two-million-euro transfer on Monday evening. Ralf Fährmann, the long-term first-team goalkeeper who has been with the club for 21 years with interruptions, was not there. He will now train only with Schalke's U23 team. Fährmann's contract runs until summer 2025. Timo Baumgartl and Dominick Drexler, who were dropped by trainer Geraerts last season, at least trained with the team on Wednesday. However, they are expected to leave the club.
Professionals Henning Matriciani, Leo Greimel, Tobias Mohr, and Sebastian Polter were also suggested to consider a move, but they trained intensively with the team on Wednesday. Lino Tempelmann (development training) is also a potential candidate for the chop.
So far, Schalke have nine new signings and eleven departures. Schalke's board chairman Mathias Tillman spoke on Wednesday about a "major overhaul, which will take time." However, he remains confident about the quality of the squad: "The squad will play in the upper half of the table."
