No more citizen's allowance for newly arrived Ukrainian refugees
Thuringia's CDU leader Mario Voigt has called for new refugees arriving from Ukraine to no longer be paid a citizens' allowance and for the financial situation of all foreign recipients of citizens' allowances to be closely examined. "The practice of the so-called change of legal status must be abolished for new arrivals from Ukraine," the CDU politician told Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND). Benefits should only be granted after a means test. "The verification procedures for foreign benefit recipients must be adapted, for example by introducing an obligation to disclose bank details and assets."
In 2022, the federal and state governments agreed to treat Ukrainian war refugees, unlike refugees from other countries, as recipients of Hartz IV, now citizen's allowance, immediately upon arrival.
In addition, refugees should not receive a citizen's allowance if they refuse reasonable work, demanded Voigt. "Recognized persons entitled to protection must be placed in work more quickly and asylum seekers must be required to do more community service in the municipalities."
The CDU's proposal to end the citizens' allowance for new Ukrainian refugees could lead to challenging circumstances for many displaced individuals, potentially impacting the migration process for some refugees. The financial situation of all foreign beneficiaries of citizens' allowances should be scrutinized more closely, including those from Ukraine.
