Weather - No major damage after thunderstorm in Rhineland-Palatinate

Heavy thunderstorms in the night before Sunday caused no major damages in Rhineland-Palatinate. "It was not as bad as expected," said a spokeswoman of the police in Koblenz. There were mainly interventions due to uprooted trees and broken branches, the police in Mainz, Kaiserslautern, Trier and Koblenz reported. "It rained and stormed heavily here, but everything stayed within the limits," said a police officer in Mainz.

In Speyer, a roof truss caught fire after a lightning strike on a multi-party house. There were no injured people, said a police spokesman in Ludwigshafen. The inhabitants of the house evacuated the building temporarily, but were able to return to their apartments after the firefighting work was completed. According to the city of Speyer, up to 40 people were cared for, including small children. The police reported only minor property damage.

The thunderstorm front with local heavy rain and occasional hail moved over the Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate, parts of Hesse and Westphalia in the night. According to the German Weather Service, there were rainfall amounts of 30 to 40 liters per square meter in a short time in some places. In some places, up to 50 to 60 liters fell.
