No investigations after attempts to access porn sites
Following attempts to access porn sites from computers belonging to the Archdiocese of Cologne, the public prosecutor's office sees no initial suspicion of a criminal offense. No investigation proceedings will be initiated, said a spokeswoman for the public prosecutor's office in Cologne on Monday following the completion of preliminary investigations. The WDR reported.
When the case came to light in August, the archdiocese stated that the firewalls had been effective. According to its own information, the archdiocese regularly checks whether the firewalls are able to prevent attempts to access high-risk websites with violent content, pornography or drugs in terms of IT security.
Following a routine check, the vicariate general received a compilation. It documented access attempts that had been successfully prevented by the web content filter. According to the archdiocese, there was no evaluation of the content behind the URLs.
According to the public prosecutor's office, the preliminary examination focused on the content and not on whether the sites were actually accessed. Visiting porn sites is only punishable if, for example, minors can be seen engaging in sexual acts.
Despite the attempts to access pornographic websites from the Archdiocese of Cologne's computers, no charges will be pressed due to the lack of initial suspicion of a criminal offense. The archdiocese's IT security measures effectively blocked these attempts, preventing any actual entry into the pornographic sites.
