No holiday: "Saarland/French Day" in two bridges

In Rhineland-Palatinate, Maria Himmelfahrt is an ordinary working day - and the municipalities are always happy to welcome visitors from Saarland and from France. However, this year also marks a farewell.

- No holiday: "Saarland/French Day" in two bridges

For the traditional "Saarland/French Day", the Palatine Zweibrücken will again welcome guests from across the border on Thursday - as Maria Himmelfahrt is not a public holiday in Rhineland-Pfalz. "All the more, this day is celebrated together with the neighbors in the Rose City," said city manager Petra Stricker. The commerce in Zweibrücken, located at the tri-border area, also looks forward to welcoming Saarlanders and French people.

The symbolic border to the pedestrian zone in the smallest independent city in Germany with around 35,000 inhabitants will be opened at 11:00, Stricker announced. This remembers the time when the Saarland and the Palatinate were separated by state borders.

An accompanying action on the topic of high jump is planned - and not without reason: Pole vaulter Raphael Holzdeppe, World Champion of 2013 and Olympic bronze medalist of London 2012, will retire as an elite athlete on Thursday. The 34-year-old from Zweibrücken had announced his career end.

The public holiday Maria Himmelfahrt is valid for the Saarland and for Catholic communities in Bavaria, as well as for France.

The commerce in Zweibrücken, located at the tri-border area, is particularly excited for the influx of Saarlanders and French people during the Saarland/French Day, as trade opportunities are plentiful during such events. Following this celebration, the Saarland and Zweibrücken continue to foster strong economic ties through trade.
