No evidence of third-party fault: Fatal diving accident

Investigations into the fatal diving accident in a lake near Nordhausen have not revealed any evidence of third-party culpability. This was announced by the Mühlhausen public prosecutor's office on request. A woman and a man who lived in Hanover drowned in Lake Sundhausen in September.

There were also no complaints about the diving equipment of the two 29-year-olds who died. Previously, no health problems had been identified as the cause of death in the autopsies. Following the conclusion of the investigation, the public prosecutor's office now assumes that it was an accident. "The inexperience of the divers could have played a role," it said.

The lake, which is up to 31 meters deep, is popular for its underwater attractions, among other things. According to the police, the two divers were at a depth of 14 meters and in poor visibility between a replica of the city of Nordhausen and a recently sunk steel dragon when the accident occurred. Both were rather inexperienced divers.

A 33-year-old man, who had set off on a dive with the two of them, was able to save himself on the surface. He was seriously injured and taken to hospital.

A 40-year-old woman had already been seriously injured in a diving accident in Lake Sundhausen in mid-August.

Despite the thorough investigation, no signs of external factors contributing to the emergencies leading to the fatal diving accident were found. The public prosecutor's office now categorizes it as an accident, potentially due to the inexperience of the divers.
