- No "air castles": 1860 Munich before complicated season
TSV 1860 Munich has resolved its goalkeeper issue just ahead of the start of the third division season. However, the revamped "Lions" and their coach Argirios Giannikis still have a lot of work to do on the football pitch.
"In every house you build, you first have to lay the foundation to make the house somewhat stable," said the Munich coach ahead of the home opener on Friday (7:00 PM/Magentasport) against last season's DFB-Pokal semifinalist, 1. FC Saarbrücken. Giannikis is currently focusing on the structural aspects.
The number one is a new signing
A goalkeeper is important for a healthy balance on the pitch. Giannikis has chosen René Vollath as the new number one, replacing Marco Hiller. "It was a close decision for René Vollath," the coach explained. "We have two very, very good goalkeepers, and the nuances made the difference. It was not an easy decision." Vollath joined from local rivals Unterhaching in the summer.
After finishing 15th last season and undergoing a major overhaul, the cash-strapped "Lions" face many uncertainties as they look ahead to the new season. "It's wise to focus on the daily routine and continue to develop the team," Giannikis emphasized. "This is not the time to build castles in the air."
The "Lions" will be testing their new goalkeeping setup against 1. FC Saarbrücken, as René Vollath takes over from Marco Hiller in the net for TSV 1860 Munich in Saarland. Despite the changes, Argirios Giannikis insists on maintaining focus on daily improvements and team development, avoiding long-term plans.
