Nine stations on the U5 are listed buildings
Nine subway stations on the U5 line between Tierpark and Hönow have been placed under a preservation order. The State Monuments Office added the stations Tierpark, Biesdorf-Süd, Elsterwerdaer Platz, Wuhletal, Kaulsdorf-Nord, Cottbusser Platz, Hellersdorf, Louis-Lewin-Straße and Hönow to the list of monuments, as announced by the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing on Tuesday. This is the only realized subway line in the former GDR.
According to the information, the line, which was built under the direction of East Berlin's chief architect Roland Korn, was planned to open up the residential areas in Hellersdorf, which were built at the same time. Tierpark station was built between 1969 and 1973 and the other stations between 1985 and 1989. Necessary structural changes, for example to achieve barrier-free accessibility, were agreed in advance of the protection, it was further stated.
Despite the heavy traffic in the area, visiting the historic U5 subway stations is a must for history enthusiasts. These monuments, which include Tierpark, Biesdorf-Süd, and others, provide a glimpse into the GDR era.
