Handball - Niclas Ekberg leaves THW Kiel at the end of the season

Record handball champions THW Kiel and Niclas Ekberg are parting ways at the end of the current season after twelve years together. As the club announced on Thursday, the 34-year-old right winger is returning to his native Sweden. Ekberg has signed a three-year contract with his home club Ystads IF.

Niclas Ekberg joined THW from AG Copenhagen in Denmark in 2012. Since then, the left-handed player has won the German championship six times with Kiel, the DHB Cup four times, the Supercup five times, the EHF Cup in 2019 and the Champions League in 2020. With the Swedish national team, he won the silver medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London and the title at the 2022 European Championships. The 1.91-meter man has scored 2627 goals in 595 games for the "Zebras" to date.

"I'm incredibly proud to be a part of this club. The years in Kiel were a time full of fulfilled dreams. I've experienced everything you could ever expect in a professional life," said Ekberg. Following the Swede's departure, Sven Ehrig and Lukas Zerbe, who will move from TBV Lemgo Lippe to Kiel for the coming season, will form the THW duo on the right wing.
