NFL in Frankfurt: RTL average rating below one million

With the live broadcast of the second and final game of the North American Football League in Frankfurt, RTL remained below one million viewers on average. According to the broadcaster, an average of 870,000 viewers tuned in to the Cologne-based private channel on Sunday afternoon when the New England Patriots lost 6:10 to the Indianapolis Colts in the Hessian metropolis. The market share was 5.6 percent.

The game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Miami Dolphins in Frankfurt a week earlier was watched by an average of 1.34 million fans (market share: 7.8 percent) on free TV.

The figures do not come close to those of ProSieben a year ago. Back then, the station's broadcast of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers against the Seattle Seahawks reached an average of 1.52 million people and, according to its own figures, achieved a market share of 8.8 percent.

RTL Group secured an extensive rights package for the American professional NFL league in September last year, replacing ProSiebenSat.1 after more than ten years. The contract is valid from the current 2023/24 season for a total of five seasons. The paid streaming service DAZN will continue to broadcast and show the NFL games of the regular season and playoffs.

Despite RTL's extensive rights for NFL games, the viewership for the second game in Frankfurt fell significantly, averaging just 870,000 viewers on television. Analysis of media coverage revealed that many fans opted to watch the game on paid streaming service DAZN instead, possibly due to dissatisfaction with the channel's broadcast.
