Soccer - Next setback for Nuremberg: Cup exit in Kaiserslautern
1. FC Nürnberg has been eliminated in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup. The Franconians lost 2-0 (0-0) away to 1. FC Kaiserslautern and suffered their next setback after two heavy defeats in the 2nd Bundesliga. Richmond Tachie (75th minute) and Ragnar Ache (78th) scored the goals for the hosts in front of 48,389 spectators at the Fritz Walter Stadium on Tuesday evening. The "Club" remained harmless, especially in offense, and thus became the last remaining Bavarian club to bow out of the DFB Cup.
Lauter deserved to win the clash between the two traditional clubs and gave their new coach Dimitrios Grammozis an ideal debut. FCK are back in the quarter-finals of the cup for the first time in ten years.
In the first half, the fans saw a match at a low level, with both teams primarily concerned with a secure defense. That was understandable, especially from Nuremberg's point of view, after the recent 4-1 defeat in Karlsruhe and the disastrous 5-0 loss at home to Fortuna Düsseldorf at the weekend.
Kaiserslautern were the slightly more active team, but often tried from the second row. Nuremberg's Christian Mathenia saved one from Marlon Ritter after 21 minutes. Coach Cristian Fiél's visitors were even less dangerous in front of goal.
That changed after the restart. A header from Daichi Hayashi following a corner from Taylan Duman was cleared off the line by Kaiserslautern goalkeeper Julian Krahl (51'). The game flattened out again after that, however, with almost no big scoring chances for either side. The Palatinate side then decided the game with a double strike in quick succession. First, Tachie scored after an assist from Jean Zimmer. Tachie then set up Ache, who scored the second goal.
