Newspaper: Bavaria takes "hot chips" off the shelves
According to the Augsburger Allgemeine newspaper, the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety is removing the extremely spicy "hot chips" from store shelves. The office is reacting to dangerous incidents in the past.
A spokesperson for the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL) said in response to an inquiry from the "Augsburger Allgemeine" (Friday edition) that, based on the findings of investigations to date, it can be assumed that no batch can be classified as safe.
The district administrative authorities responsible for enforcement "have already been informed and asked to take appropriate measures and remove the product from circulation regardless of the batch", the newspaper quotes the spokesperson as saying.
Previously, two import companies had already recalled individual batches of the product due to fluctuating and sometimes extremely high levels of the chili component capsaicin. Eating the tortilla chips is considered a test of courage among young people, for example in internet challenges. Some children and young people had to be treated in hospital as a result.
In Baden-Württemberg, the "Hot Chips" can no longer be sold. At the end of last week, the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety also initially issued a warning against eating them.
The extreme spiciness of "hot chips" has led to hospitalizations among young people, who often consider eating them a challenge. The Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety encourages district authorities to remove any batch of these chips from circulation due to safety concerns.
