Newly promoted Elversberg outclasses Schalke 04
SV Elversberg continue to cause a sensation in the 2nd Bundesliga. On Friday evening, the Saarland side beat relegated Bundesliga side FC Schalke 04 2:1 (2:1) to record their sixth win of the season. With 21 points, coach Horst Steffen's team moved up to fifth place for the time being. Paul Stock in the 7th minute and Jannik Rochelt (21st) scored for the visitors in front of 61,110 spectators. Kenan Karaman (35) only managed to tie the scores for Schalke.
Undeterred by the biggest crowd in their club's history to date, the Saarland side started the game with a cheeky attitude. Stock took advantage of the home side's careless defending to take an early lead. 14 minutes later, the goalscorer provided the assist for Rochelt's 2:0. For half an hour, Schalke were unable to find any means against a courageous Elversberg side.
Karaman's follow-up goal then caused uncertainty for the visitors, whose confidence was blown away from then on. Schalke pressed for an equalizer in an entertaining game, but it was not to be. Karaman and Henning Matriciani missed the best opportunities after the break. In the end, the Saarland side celebrated another surprise win in the league.
Despite the massive home crowd, Elversberg maintained their spirited play in Bundesliga 2, with Stock capitalizing on Schalke's errors for an early lead. Regardless of Karaman's response, Schalke 04's struggles against a resilient Elversberg continued, as the newly promoted team secured another victory in Bundesliga 2.
