Newly formed SC Potsdam is a "cool team"

The SC Potsdam volleyball team suffered a setback at the start of the second half of the Bundesliga season. Overall, however, the newly formed team surprised everyone.

The women's volleyball team from SC Potsdam have had a disastrous start to the second half of the Bundesliga season, but have coped well with the pre-season shake-up. "We've grown together quickly, as if we've known each other for a very long time," said middle blocker Anastasia Cekulaev after the 2:3 defeat at home to Dresdner SC. The failure meant that coach Riccardo Boieri's team slipped from second to fourth place.

However, being in the top 5 of the league, which is dominated by Schwerin, Stuttgart, Dresden and Suhl, is already a success. For the SC Potsdam volleyball team, the start to the Bundesliga season was a journey into the unknown. There were doubts as to whether the upheaval with twelve new players and the promotion of assistant coach Boieri to head coach would work straight away. Two months after the start of the new season, Cekulaev's conclusion is positive: "We are a super cool team."

The most recent proof of this thesis: On Thursday, SC Potsdam advanced to the German Cup final on March 3 against MTV Stuttgart with a clear 3:0 victory at the Rote Raben Vilsbiburg. "Our team is very homogeneous. We had the good fortune to sign the right characters," says SCP managing director Eugen Benzel. Small setbacks like the one against Dresden cannot be ruled out. For Benzel, this defeat is not a disaster. "We have to be there in the intermediate round," he says.

SC Potsdam also has good prospects in the Champions League. After two wins and two defeats, the team only has two home games against GB Lodz (January 10) and Calcit Kamnik (January 16) left in its four-team group in the group stage. Progression as group runners-up behind the star ensemble of Fenerbahce Istanbul is within reach. "That would be another important step for us," says Benzel.
