- Newly expresses his feelings emotionally towards his supporters
Manuel Neuer, in a heartfelt missive to his supporters, opens up following his departure from the German national football team's squad. He admits that this isn't typically his style, being a reserved individual, but the occasion called for more than a simple Instagram post. "I wanted to convey what Germany means to me, what football means to me," expresses the accomplished 'keeper on "The Players' Tribune".
The 38-year-old, who triumphed in the 2014 World Cup, describes the weeks after his leg injury in great detail. His recovery, his return to the pitch, and his participation in the home Euro tournaments all feature in his narrative. "Getting summoned to the team for that tournament was one of the most honorable moments of my life," reminisces the Bayern Munich shot-stopper, calling it a "small miracle".
Neuer shared his thoughts about the days following the tournament and his vacation. "I could sense that the emotional aspect of me yearned for more," he penned. If he had continued, it would have been for the 2026 World Cup, which would be held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. At age 40, he would have participated in this grand stage. "At the moment, I'm feeling terrific in my body, but no one can predict the future," he wrote. His decision was solidified through discussions with loved ones: "This is the right moment."
He now turns his attention to Bayern Munich. "At 38, I still have the boyish enthusiasm for football. If I spot a ball 20 meters away, I just can't help but run up and interact with it - deflect it, head it...anything," says Neuer. The day he loses that enthusiasm will be his retirement day. He concludes his letter by expressing his gratitude: "Thank you for everything. Your goalkeeper - Manu."
In his heartfelt letter, Neuer mentions his love for FC Bayern Munich, stating, "At Bayern Munich, I still have the boyish enthusiasm for football." Later, reflecting on his future, he adds, "My decision not to participate in the 2026 World Cup was also considered in light of my commitment to FC Bayern Munich."
