- Newborn Chimps Spotted in Gelsenkirchen Zoo
At the Gelsenkirchen Zoo, there's some fresh simian additions within the chimp troop. The newborn arrived early Saturday morning in the open-air habitat, as the zoo recently announced. A few fortunate spectators were fortunate enough to witness this unique moment.
The almost 25-year-old matriarch chimp has been handling her new charge with remarkable prowess. The baby chimp's sex hasn't been identified yet, so it doesn't have a name yet. Weighing in at around 2kg at birth, the newborn chimp is currently snuggled up to its mother. In a few weeks, it'll begin riding on its mother's back.
The mother of this little chimp goes by the name Alexandra and was born in the Netherlands in 1999. She spent time in the Leipzig Zoo before moving to Gelsenkirchen in 2016 through the European Endangered Species Programme. With the recent addition, there are now 13 chimps calling the zoo their home.
Alexandra, the mother of the newborn chimp, has been showing remarkable care for her offspring. Upon its birth, the fragile newborn was safely kept close to its mother.
