Sailing - New Zealand wins second pre-regatta for the 37th America's Cup
Emirates Team New Zealand is the dominant force in the 37th America's Cup at the turn of the year. The Cup defenders prevailed in the final duel of the second pre-regatta off Jeddah on the Red Sea against Patrizio Bertelli's team Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli from Italy.
Like the first pre-regatta in Spain, the pre-Christmas summit was held on the small AC40 training and test yachts. Ernesto Bertarelli's Alinghi Red Bull Racing team sailed to third place ahead of the US team NYYC American Magic, Sir Ben Ainslie's British Cup chasers from Team Ineos Britannia and the French Orient Express Racing Team with German-French co-racing team owner Stephan Kandler.
Italy's young stars are making a conspicuously strong showing in their first outing: 19-year-old three-time Optimist World Champion Marco Gradoni and 31-year-old Nacra 17 Olympic champion Ruggero Tita steered the Azzurri to second place as the best challenger team in Prada patriarch Patrizio Bertelli's seventh Cup attempt.
From August 29, 2024, the five challenger teams in the Louis Vuitton Cup will compete on the new AC75 Cup yachts for the right to challenge New Zealand's Cup defenders in the 37th America's Cup from October 12 to 20. The results of the pre-regattas have no influence on the challenger series and the Cup match, but offer the opportunity for a sporting test of strength. With the second pre-regatta, the America's Cup has made a stop in the Orient for the first time in its 172-year history.
