New York Judge: New trial against Weinstein starts on November 12
Further details of the negotiations would be discussed during a hearing on September 12, the judge added. The ailing Weinstein was wheeled into the courtroom in a wheelchair, the 72-year-old's gaze appeared absent.
Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison in New York in March 2020 for this rape charge as well as for forcing former production assistant Mimi Haleyi to perform oral sex. The highest court in the state of New York overturned the verdict in May due to procedural errors and ordered a retrial.
The court justified its decision by stating that in the trial, testimonies of alleged Weinstein victims, who were not mentioned in the indictment, were admitted.
The overturning of the verdict caused disappointment and horror in the #MeToo movement against sexual misconduct. However, Weinstein remained in prison as he was sentenced to 16 years in prison in Los Angeles in February 2023 for charges of sexual assault in another case.
More than 80 women have accused Weinstein of harassment, sexual advances, or rape. Among them are prominent actresses like Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, or Ashley Judd.
