New Year's Eve: consultation with home affairs politicians on operational planning
The Senate Interior Administration wants to discuss the operational planning for the upcoming New Year's Eve on December 15 with Berlin's interior politicians. Corresponding invitations will be sent out in the next few days, said Interior State Secretary Christian Hochgrebe on Monday in the Interior Committee of the House of Representatives, where he stood in for Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD), who was ill. Such meetings were already customary before the May 1st operations. The interior administration is in close contact with the police and fire department to ensure the "greatest possible safety for our city".
Hochgrebe explained that the events at the turn of the year 2022/2023 had been analyzed in detail and the experience gained would be incorporated into the planning. Last New Year's Eve saw riots with attacks on police officers and emergency services, particularly in Berlin. Hotspots in the capital included the Reuterkiez district near Hermannplatz and parts of Sonnenallee in the High-Deck housing estate.
In order to prevent such outbreaks of violence, the police and fire department are stepping up their preventative measures once again, according to the Senate. These include further prevention events in problem neighborhoods, youth protection checks and targeted approaches to potential perpetrators of violence. The police and fire department want to work more closely together on New Year's Eve to analyze the danger situation and keep volunteer fire departments away from dangerous locations.
State Secretary of the Interior Hochgrebe announced that Senator Spranger would once again push for stricter gun laws at the next Conference of Interior Ministers, which she is currently chairing. In addition, the SPD politician will continue to campaign for a change in the law to make it possible to ban the sale of fireworks at the turn of the year.
The House of Representatives was discussed as a venue for the consultation with home affairs politicians on the operational planning for New Year's Eve, aiming to enhance internal security and prevent crime. In light of the past year's incidents, including attacks on police officers and emergency services, the Senate is emphasizing the importance of close collaboration between the police, fire department, and Internal Security to ensure internal security at the turn of the year.
