New timetables for rail and public transport

New train timetables will apply from Sunday. There are new connections, but in some cases also higher ticket prices than before. Long-distance travelers can soon expect new travel options - for example, you can travel from Saarbrücken all the way to the Baltic Sea.

Rail traffic - New timetables for rail and public transport

The transport associations in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland are also changing their timetables on Sunday night. At the start of the new year, passengers will also face higher ticket prices in some cases. Construction work and the associated restrictions are also expected in many places in 2024.

The rail company Vlexx will be offering more journeys in Saarland from December 10. In future, several connections on the RB74 line from Homburg will not only run to Neunkirchen, but also on to Illingen and will also run on Sundays. The frequency of the line will also be increased.

Four new journeys will be added to the RB72 from Saarbrücken to Lebach-Jabach. For reasons of sustainability, the company will no longer use printed folding timetables in Saarland. However, customers can either print these out themselves or have them printed out and delivered at the customer center. There will only be minor adjustments on the local route. For example, the RB34 from Baumholder will in future run partly to Bad Kreuznach instead of just to Kirn.

Due to a lot of construction work by DB Netz AG, restrictions are to be expected in many places in the coming year. For example, Vlexx services between Mainz and Worms and between Mainz and Frankfurt will be canceled from mid-July to mid-December 2024. There will also be night-time cancellations on the RE3 and RB33 lines between Gau-Algesheim and Mainz from August to November.

In the district of Cochem-Zell, there will be a new bus service and 51 new bus routes with the timetable change, as announced by Verkehrsbund Rhein-Mosel(VRM). Prices in the VRM area will rise by an average of around eight percent at the turn of the year, but school and senior citizen tickets will not be affected.

In the north of the Vulkaneifel district, almost all towns around Gerolstein, Hillesheim and Jünkerath will be connected to Prüm at regular, at least two-hourly intervals, according to the Trier Transport Association.

There are also innovations on Deutsche Bahn's long-distance route: From March 2024, an ICE Sprinter will run from Saarbrücken to Berlin and to the Baltic island of Rügen at weekends. There will be more ICE trains on the Middle Rhine route overall, partly because Intercity connections will be replaced, as reported by Deutsche Bahn. Accordingly, one or two ICE trains per day and direction will run on the route between Stuttgart via the Middle Rhine Valley to Cologne instead of IC trains, which will then travel on to Berlin.

With the timetable change, rail competitor FlixTrain is also expanding its services. Mainz will also be served again from spring 2024.
