New shrimp farm planned near Hanover
A new indoor shrimp farm is to be built in the Hanover region. This has been contractually agreed between the company K+S and the start-up Aquapurna, as announced by a K+S spokesperson on Friday. According to the information, K+S is investing an amount in the low double-digit million range in the project at the Sigmundshall site near Wunstorf, a former potash mine. Aquapurna is receiving further investments in the seven-figure range from private investors. According to the company, it will be the largest and most modern indoor shrimp farm in Europe.
The plan is for sustainable shrimp farming that protects the environment. Imported shrimp are often associated with ecological problems such as the destruction of mangrove forests and bycatch. Other technical solutions in Europe are often too expensive, according to Aquapurna. That is why the company is focusing on green and sustainable technologies. All steps are to take place in Germany.
Another shrimp farm in Lower Saxony is located in Gronau in the district of Hildesheim. The new shrimp farm at the former mine site is to be built in three construction phases, with two production halls planned. In the first construction phase from 2024 to mid-2025, a production hall and a supply and infrastructure wing will be built.
A recirculation system will be installed for the rearing process, in which more than 98% of the rearing water will be reused and little waste water will be produced. A capacity of up to 800 tons of shrimp per year is planned.
Around 50 jobs will be created on site, according to the company. The existing research facility for rearing shrimp at the site, which has been in operation since 2021, will continue to operate.
The new shrimp farm, a project backed by K+S and Aquapurna, emphasizes nutrition and sustainability, aiming to produce high-quality shrimp while minimizing environmental impact. To achieve this, innovative green and sustainable technologies will be employed, focusing on energy-efficient processes and waste reduction.
The company's focus on nutrition extends beyond the shrimp farm, as they seek to provide balanced and nutritious food and drink options to their customers, emphasizing the importance of overall well-being.
