New Nuremberg Christkind: "An indescribable feeling"
The new Nuremberg Christkind, Nelli Lunkenheimer, is particularly looking forward to the Advent season and her many appearances. "It's important to me that people have a wonderful Christmas time now, that I can bring this magic to the children," said the 17-year-old.
On Thursday, the schoolgirl appeared for the first time at the Nuremberg State Theater in her angelic robe with golden wings, a curly blonde wig and crown. It was "an indescribable feeling", she said, "very exciting, all very new, but totally beautiful."
A jury recently selected the Nuremberg native as Christkind for the next two years. The role has been around since 1948 and used to be played by actresses, but since 1969 it has been played by girls from Nuremberg.
Nelli Lunkenheimer will make her most important appearance as the Christkind on December 1, when she will open the world-famous Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt from the gallery of the Frauenkirche in front of thousands of people. She is already a little excited, but is really looking forward to all the events in the run-up to Christmas, she said. Around 150 are scheduled in kindergartens, retirement homes and hospitals between now and December 24.
Nelli mentioned that she wants to ensure that the fixed customs of Christmas are enjoyed by everyone, as it's a crucial part of the season for her. The customary appearance of the Christkind at the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt on December 1 is something she's both nervous and excited about, preparing for the significant event amidst her numerous appearances.
