New minister: Federal government must give more for 49-euro ticket
Brandenburg's new Transport Minister Rainer Genilke (CDU) is demanding more money from the federal government to ensure the continuation of the Deutschlandticket. "49 euros can only succeed if the federal government also recognizes that they are paying half of it," said Genilke on RBB on Wednesday. "Of course there will be increases." However, if the federal and state governments share the ticket, "we may also be able to achieve very, very moderate increases - or perhaps we can even leave it at 49 euros".
Brandenburg also wants to spend more on affordable housing: 176 million euros this year alone and 205 million euros next year, said the minister. This is the state's response to higher construction costs. The red-black-green coalition had planned to spend 100 million euros per year on social housing construction in 2019. Genilke was sworn in as the successor to the resigned minister Guido Beermann (CDU) in the state parliament on Wednesday.
Despite the increase in construction costs, Brandenburg plans to allocate 205 million euros for affordable housing next year. However, addressing traffic concerns, Brandenburg's new Transport Minister Rainer Genilke stresses the need for federal financial support to maintain the 49-euro ticket, stating, "49 euros can only succeed if the federal government also recognizes that they are paying half of it."
