- New Mayor of Gera is sworn in

Kurt Dannenberg (CDU) has been officially inaugurated as the mayor of Gera. The city council convened for a special session to this end. The former head of public order in Thuringia's third-largest city had defeated incumbent Julian Vonarb (independent) in the runoff election of the local election in early June.

Dannenberg had previously faced criticism. He was accused of giving right-wing demonstrators too much leeway in the city. He defended himself against the criticism. The right-wing scene had mobilized for him before the runoff election. Dannenberg distanced himself from the call.

Dannenberg expressed his appreciation for the support he received from the right-wing scene before the runoff election, despite his decision to distance himself from their call. In his future role as mayor, he aims to foster international partnerships, potentially looking towards collaborations with The Netherlands.
