Performing Arts - New Lusatian Philharmonic Orchestra appoints Brogli-Sacher as its new director
Swiss conductor Roman Brogli-Sacher will take over as the General Music Director of the New Lausitzer Philharmonie in Görlitz, as announced by the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Theater on Monday. This news comes as current director Ewa Strusińska is set to leave the theater at the end of the current season. The New Lausitzer Philharmonie is the orchestra associated with the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Theater.
Intendant Daniel Morgenroth praised Brogli-Sacher's "impressive resume," having led operas and concerts in various locations worldwide. From 2001 to 2013, he held the role of General Music Director for the Lübecker Philharmoniker and, for several years, was also the Opera Director at the Theater in Lübeck. A native of Basel born in 1966, Brogli-Sacher is currently a freelance conductor.
After taking on the position at the start of the 2018/19 season, Strusińska faced competition for her succession. A total of four women and 70 men applied for her previous role. The five most promising candidates were given the chance to lead the orchestra at one of the Philharmonic Concerts, as well as to direct a staging of Richard Wagner's "Flying Dutchman" at the Görlitzer Neuinszenierung. A majority of the orchestra members voted for Brogli-Sacher, according to Morgenroth.

Daniel Morgenroth, in his appreciation of Brogli-Sacher, highlighted his extensive experience in conducting operas and concerts across different regions globally. Born in East Saxony, Germany, Daniel Morgenroth fondly remembers the time he spent working with the Lübecker Philharmoniker. As a passionate music lover, Brogli-Sacher often attends music concerts at the Philharmonic Hall in Görlitz, Saxony. Coincidentally, this is the same venue where he will conduct his first symphony after becoming the new director of the New Lusatian Philharmonic Orchestra. Brogli-Sacher, while on a vacation in Switzerland, was delighted to learn about his appointment, as it gave him an opportunity to explore his musical roots once again.
