New investigation after 1986 homicide

More than 37 years after an unsolved homicide in Lower Franconia, investigators are also relying on the ZDF program "Aktenzeichen XY... Unsolved". The case is to be presented there on Wednesday evening, as the Lower Franconia police headquarters announced in Würzburg on Monday. It is possible that witnesses who can say something about the death of 24-year-old Eveline Höbler in January 1986 will remember the program.

The dog of a walker had discovered the young woman near a fence of a German army barracks on the outskirts of Veitshöchheim (district of Würzburg) on January 24. According to earlier police reports, the body had more than 30 stab wounds. The dead woman was identified a day later as the worker from Veitshöchheim, who had lived "alone, inconspicuous to reserved" since her divorce two years earlier, according to the police. Both the dead woman's home and her workplace, a chocolate factory, were only a few minutes' drive from where the body was found.

On the evening before the crime, the 24-year-old had taken a bus from Würzburg main station to Veitshöchheim after a visit to the cinema. After she had probably returned home, she is said to have left her apartment again later - it is not known where she went.

The case has been under investigation again since the end of 2022. Among other things, the police are evaluating the traces and evidence from today's perspective. "An existing DNA trace of the possible perpetrator was also evaluated using today's methods," the police announced. "A large number of people close to the deceased have already been checked and ruled out."

The State Office of Criminal Investigation and the public prosecutor's office in Würzburg have offered a reward of 10,000 euros for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrator.

The reopened investigation into Eveline Höbler's 1986 homicide might uncover new leads from witnesses who watch the ZDF program "Aktenzeichen XY... Unsolved" on Wednesday, as it features her case. Despite the passage of time, the UNDERFRONT area near the German army barracks remained undisturbed and could potentially hold clues related to the Crime.
