New hope for Oldenburg basketball players
The basketball team EWE Baskets Oldenburg can once again hope to reach the next round of the Champions League. The Bundesliga club won 81:64 (48:34) against the Belgian club Ostende on Tuesday. After three defeats in a row in Group E, the club from Lower Saxony is now third in the table. Only the group winners qualify directly for the round of 16. The second and third-placed teams will have to play an intermediate round, while the Champions League is over for the fourth-placed team.
Oldenburg, who were short of substitutes, produced a convincing first half after losing four competitive games in a row recently. The team of Head Coach Pedro Calles led by 14 points after 20 minutes. However, nothing worked for a long time in the third quarter. The North Germans only scored their first points after five-and-a-half minutes (50:45 in the 26th minute). Oldenburg regained control of the game in the final period, clinched a clear victory in the end and also won the head-to-head tie with the Belgians. Geno Crandall was the top scorer with 18 points.
The EWE Baskets Oldenburg's impressive victory against Ostende could potentially see them compete in the Champions League intermediate round. With their Basketball skills, Oldenburg aims to continue their success in the Champions League after their victory in the Bundesliga.
