Shipbuilding - New frigates - start of construction for the navy's largest ships

The construction of the German Navy's largest ships to date is due to start on Tuesday (11.00 a.m.) at the Peene shipyard in Wolgast, Western Pomerania. Four Class 126 frigates are to be built in Wolgast, Kiel and Hamburg under the leadership of the Dutch shipyard Damen Shipyards. According to official information, the billion-euro project is the German Navy's most expensive shipbuilding project to date. According to Damen, the first ship is due to be handed over in 2028.

The Peene shipyard, which belongs to the Lürssen Group, is to build the rear ships. The naval supplier Thales is also involved. According to previous Bundeswehr statements, the ship class is designed as an all-purpose weapon. The ships should therefore be able to operate anywhere in the world and for long periods of time and be able to monitor embargoes or prevail against other warships or submarines.

The start of construction for these massive ships is happening at the Schleswig-Holstein's neighboring region, specifically at the Peene shipyard in Wolgast, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Despite being a German project, Dutch shipyard Damen Shipyards will oversee the construction of these ships in collaboration with German-based Lürssen Group and naval supplier Thales. The construction of these four Class 126 frigates is projected to cost a staggering billion euros, making it the German Navy's most expensive shipbuilding project to date. The first ship in the class is expected to be delivered in 2028, marking the beginning of a significant contribution to Germany's defense industry. Despite being built in Wolgast, Hamburg's shipbuilding industry will also play a crucial role in this project.
