Animals - New dog ordinance applies from July: no dangerous breeds

Newly, there is the requirement for all dogs over the age of eight weeks to be identified by a Microchip Transponder for registration purposes. The local authorities would thus obtain a secure overview of the number of dogs, it was stated. Furthermore, dogs were required to be registered with proof of breed, weight, age, color, and chip number.

Additionally, leash laws apply to dogs in pedestrian zones and public transportation, during carnivals, demonstrations, and other gatherings, as well as in parks and public gardens and on sports and camping grounds. In public transportation, the dog must also wear a muzzle.

Dog Regulation

  1. In compliance with the new regulations, the Ministry of the Interior in Brandenburg has introduced a mandatory microchipping and registration process for dogs in Potsdam, ensuring each canine is identified by a Microchip Transponder, providing details such as breed, weight, age, color, and chip number.
  2. While adhering to leash laws that apply to dogs in various public areas, it is also essential to note that the dogs' races and breeds are subject to examination during this registration process.
  3. Residents of Potsdam must also bear in mind that the established regulations extend to the protection of all animals within the city limits, including those in parks, public gardens, sports grounds, and camping sites, ensuring a harmonious coexistence among humans and their pets.
