Museums - New director of the Old Masters Picture Gallery in Dresden
The Old Masters Picture Gallery of the Dresden State Art Collections (SKD) is to have a new director. Prof. Holger Jacob-Friesen will take up the post on March 1 next year, the Ministry of Culture announced on Wednesday. The 56-year-old will also take over the management of the sculpture collection up to 1800, whose holdings have been on display in the Semper Gallery since February 2020. Jacob-Friesen succeeds Stephan Koja, who headed the museum until March 31 of this year.
Jacob-Friesen described the Picture Gallery as "a treasure house of European art history". "I would therefore like to see a museum that is communicative, cosmopolitan and audience-oriented, that inspires people of all generations and backgrounds to enjoy art, that inspires amazement, knowledge, debate and enjoyment." The Cologne-born honorary professor of art history has been Head of the Collection and Science Department at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe since 2011.
"He is regarded as an expert in German, Dutch, French and Italian painting from the 14th to 18th centuries, who can also explain this art in a lively and inspiring way," said Saxony's Culture Minister Barbara Klepsch (CDU).
