New British Foreign Secretary in Berlin - Baerbock discusses "moving closer" to the EU
Annalena Baerbock described Great Britain as an "indispensable part of Europe." Germany is examining with the new British government "how the United Kingdom can also come closer to the EU again," she added. Great Britain officially left the EU in January 2020.
The visit of the Labour politician in Germany took place two days after the parliamentary election in Great Britain - in which a landslide victory of the Labour Party led to the replacement of the Conservative Party, which had been in power for 14 years - and a day after Lammy's appointment as Foreign Minister.
Lammy, the lawyer, is the successor of David Cameron. He intends to approach the EU again; otherwise, there are no major changes in foreign policy under the new social democratic Labour government. Lammy was elected as the youngest MP at the age of 27. His ancestors were slaves from South American Guyana.
During the meeting in Berlin on Saturday, the upcoming NATO summit in Washington was reportedly discussed. "We want to become more robust in Europe and strengthen the European pillar of NATO," Baerbock wrote about it. Right before the NATO summit, it is also about "how we can effectively coordinate our support for Ukraine with our allies."
Regarding the Gaza conflict, the Minister wrote in her contribution on X that the plan proposed by US President Joe Biden for a ceasefire is "the only way out of the war's deadlock."
