Film Festival - New Berlinale top management is introduced

The future director of the Berlin International Film Festival has a face. Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth wants to present the new head this Tuesday. A press conference has been announced for 12.00 noon at the Gropius Bau. Prior to this, the supervisory board of the Kulturveranstaltungen des Bundes in Berlin (KBB), which is responsible for the Berlinale, will meet under the chairmanship of the Green politician.

Roth had announced that the Berlinale would in future be headed by just one person to succeed the previous management duo of Carlo Chatrian (52) and Mariette Rissenbeek (67). Chatrian then drew the consequences and announced that he would be leaving the festival after the 2024 edition. Rissenbeek had already announced her departure beforehand.

Roth wants to maintain the international significance of the film festival. She wants the Berlinale to play in the same league as Cannes, Venice or Toronto.

A commission chaired by Roth was looking for a suitable successor. Among those involved were director and Oscar winner Edward Berger ("Nothing New in the West"), the managing director of the German Film Academy Anne Leppin, actress Sara Fazilat and producer Roman Paul.

Numerous filmmakers had criticized Roth in connection with the planned change in leadership. The Berlinale is one of the major film festivals alongside Cannes and Venice. The next edition is planned from February 15 to 25, 2024.
