Soccer - Neuer and the home European Championship: "Will have top goalkeeper"
Bayern captain Manuel Neuer has so far had no contact with his national team rival following the back operation on FC Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen. The 37-year-old said this after FC Bayern Munich's 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.
"We're in regular contact," Neuer added on Prime Video. And with a view to next year's European Championship at home and the competition with ter Stegen, the 2014 World Cup winner explained: "I think you also have to understand that we're team-mates, that we all want the same thing, that we want to try and play a great European Championship in our own country. And that we'll have a top goalkeeper between the posts, no matter how it turns out in the end."
After suffering a serious leg fracture after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, 37-year-old Neuer wants to return to the DFB squad next March for the first international matches of the tournament year against France and the Netherlands. After his successful comeback at Bayern, national coach Julian Nagelsmann has already promised him a call-up.
During Neuer's absence, ter Stegen was able to establish himself as number one. However, the 31-year-old must first get fit again. Ter Stegen already missed the last international matches of the year in November against Turkey and Austria, both of which were lost, due to back problems. There was talk of a break of around two months after the back surgery. Neuer has been in goal for the DFB at every World Cup and European Championship tournament since 2010.
