Nestroy Prize for Jelinek premiere at the Deutsches Theater
The production of Elfriede Jelinek's "Angabe der Person" at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin has won this year's Nestroy Prize for the best production in the German-speaking world. Director Jossi Wieler accepted the award on Sunday evening in Vienna for the world premiere of the play, in which the Nobel Prize for Literature winner addresses the Holocaust, among other things. In his acceptance speech, Wieler pointed out the importance of Jelinek's work at a time "when Jews here and elsewhere can no longer be sure of their lives".
At the Vienna Nestroy Theatre Awards, Michael Maertens was honored as best actor. The jury of theater critics praised the Hamburg-born actor for his portrayal of a Viennese factory owner in Schnitzler's drama "Das weite Land" at the Burgtheater in Vienna. The stage star avoided commenting on his much-discussed dismissal as the leading actor in the Salzburg Festival's "Jedermann" by feigning a microphone breakdown at the end of his acceptance speech.
Saioa Alvarez Ruiz was awarded Best Actress for her performance in Florentina Holzinger's sensational production "Ophelia's Got Talent" at the Volksbühne in Berlin and the Volkstheater in Vienna. "She impresses with her fascinating stage presence, ambiguous wit and bravado - and does absolutely nothing like what we are used to seeing from people with disabilities in the theater," said the jury. "I would like to see many more of these self-determined, strong roles," said Alvarez Ruiz.
Visitors interested in attending the critically acclaimed production of "Angabe der Person" at the Deutsches Theater should be aware of the potential theater prices.
