Accolade bestowed - Neo Rauch and Thielemann are awarded the Constitutional Medal.
The talented artist Neo Rauch and esteemed conductor Christian Thielemann have been bestowed the Saxon Constitutional Medal for their impressive contributions to society. During a ceremony in Dresden, Landtag President Matthias Roessler praised Rauch for being one of the leading contemporary artists, with a strong connection to his homeland.
Rauch's steadfast commitment to realism and exceptional resolve have made him a popular figure in Leipzig, fostering a whole generation of painters in the process. His artwork has become highly sought after, gracing the walls of prestigious museums and public collections throughout the world.
As for Thielemann, the outgoing chief conductor of the Dresden State Opera, he was lauded for his exceptional musical talent and significant impact on the cultural scenes. Over the years, Thielemann has enriched the lives of those in the Free State with his music, nurturing a profound appreciation for the art form. "You join the ranks of other great, influential artistic figures," Roessler remarked before he moves to the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden at the end of the current season.
A total of eight Constitutional Medals were given out on this day, with the long-standing Leipzig Zoo chief veterinarian Klaus Eulenberger and political scientist and extremism researcher Eckhard Jesse also receiving the Silver Constitutional Medal for their respective achievements in social, scientific, economic, and political realms.
First established in 1990, the Silver Constitutional Medal is the most prestigious award granted by the Free State. It's been handed to 190 distinguished women and men for their invaluable contributions to the region's development.
