Resident of an apartment building in Chemnitz suspected of arson in stairwell. The 33-year-old reportedly complained to neighbors about noise from their party, just before the fire on Monday evening, according to police. The man was intoxicated and taken into custody. He has since been released.

Police are investigating the case as suspected arson. Several cardboard boxes were burning in the stairwell of the apartment building. The building was evacuated, and a 35-year-old resident was taken to a hospital with suspected smoke inhalation. Residents were allowed to return to their apartments. The extent of the damage is not yet known.

The fire in the stairwell of the apartment building was highly suspicious, given the man's complaint about noise and his subsequent arrest for intoxication. The burning cardboard boxes likely played a role in the spread of the fire, which required the evacuation of the building.
