- Neighborhood of Duren company not to eat garden fruit
After a substance leaked at a company in Düren, environmental experts advise residents not to consume any fruits or vegetables from their gardens as a precaution. The district government of Cologne announced this on Friday. The recommendation comes from the State Office for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection NRW (LANUV), which took samples.
At the company in Düren-Merken, so-called alkyd resin based on soybean oil was released unexpectedly on July 25th, according to the district government. This is not considered a hazardous substance, the authority stated. Initially, it was assumed that the leak was limited only to the company's premises. However, residents later reported sticky spots on surfaces. The LANUV then took samples on Friday.
The result: There is no immediate danger to expect. However, since complete safety with larger intake into the body cannot be guaranteed, it is recommended not to consume fruits and vegetables from the surrounding gardens for the time being. It is not expected that the substances will accumulate in the plants or in the soil. Therefore, the next harvests can be used normally.
The environmental concern in Düren has led to an advisory from the LANUV, urging residents to avoid consuming garden-grown fruits and vegetables temporarily. Despite the absence of immediate hazards, consuming larger quantities of these produce may not ensure complete safety.
