Museums - Negotiations on the takeover of the museum by the district
Negotiations for the takeover of the Kurt Tucholsky Literature Museum in Rheinsberg by the district of Ostprignitz-Ruppin are to begin at the start of the year. After the Rheinsberg town council (SSV) gave the green light on Monday evening, the takeover is to be initiated as soon as possible, said the district's spokesperson, Britta Avantario, on Tuesday in response to an inquiry. The town of Rheinsberg could not initially be reached.
The district wants to secure the museum with a scientific management. The district council had therefore decided to offer the town of Rheinsberg the opportunity to take over the museum's sponsorship on April 1. For the negotiations, the city councillors suspended the city's budget security concept, which envisaged merging the museum management with the management of the tourist information office, until the end of March. He has also extended his contract by one month until the end of March, said museum director Peter Böthig, who is due to retire.
Deputy Mayor Norman Geist explained that the museum in its current form was a major cost factor for the town of Rheinsberg. Despite funding from the state amounting to 65,000 euros and a further 15,000 euros from the district, the town would have to make up a deficit of around 241,000 euros this year, Geist calculated.
The negotiations must also clarify how to deal with the museum's extensive collection, which is owned by the city. One possible solution would be a temporary loan agreement, said Böthig, who estimates the value at half a million euros.
The German Cultural Council had placed the museum on the Red List of endangered cultural institutions following the SVV's initial decision. The Brandenburg Ministry of Culture is also committed to preserving the world's only Tucholsky Museum under academic management. State Secretary for Culture Claudia Roth (Greens) also supports the takeover of the Tucholsky Museum by the district. "It provides a very good insight into the impressive work of this extraordinary writer, journalist, essayist and intellectual, who is still influential today," Roth told dpa.
