Legislative body - Negotiations concerning salary increases for civil servants in the northern region
The Mecklenburg-Vorpommern parliament has approved measures to increase the salaries of approximately 17,000 local civil servants. They passed two bills without any objections. The first one mandates that employees should receive at least a 15% higher wage than someone receiving basic security. According to the Minister of Finance, Heiko Geue (SPD), in 2023, the pay gap for the lowest paid group in MV will be 22%. The second law governs the transfer of the collective agreement for workers from December 2023 to civil servants.
A discussion arose about whether the state as an employer offers attractive enough salaries to successfully compete for talented workers with other federal states and the federal government. The CDU deputy, Marc Reinhardt, stated that Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's civil servant salaries rank among the bottom third in the national comparison. Geue (SPD) spoke of a proposal from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to the other northern coastal states to create a unified corridor in wage regulations. "In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, an A9 road is not comparable to an A9 in Schleswig-Holstein or with the federal government," he clarified. This principle also applies to other salary levels. However, it remains unclear whether the mentioned states are open to a similar salary scale.
