NDR poll: Red-Greens without majority in Lower Saxony
If state elections were held in Lower Saxony on Sunday, the CDU would be the strongest party. According to a poll conducted by Infratest dimap on behalf of NDR Niedersachsen, the CDU has 28 percent of the vote. The red-green state government would lose its majority: The SPD achieved 26 percent of the vote - 7.4 percentage points less than in the state election. The Greens would lose 1.5 points and achieve 13 percent. The survey was published on Tuesday.
The AfD would become the third strongest party. It improved its result significantly from 11% to 18%. The FDP is at 5 percent in the survey.
A Jamaica coalition between the CDU, Greens and FDP, a grand coalition between the CDU and SPD and a coalition between the CDU and AfD would be mathematically possible - although the CDU has categorically ruled this out.
The majority of people in Lower Saxony are very satisfied or satisfied with Minister President Stephan Weil (SPD). His approval rating is 60 percent. That is three percentage points less than in October 2022.
Weil was elected Minister President for the third time on November 8, 2022. As in his first term of office, his SPD governs together with the Greens. From 2017 to 2022, the Social Democrats formed a coalition with the CDU.
Despite the CDU's lead, the red-green coalition in Parliament would no longer have a majority due to loss of votes by both SPD and Greens. In the hypothetical scenario of a new election, potential coalition options include a Jamaica alliance between CDU, Greens, and FDP, a grand coalition between CDU and SPD, or a coalition between CDU and AfD, although the CDU has rejected the last option.
