Changes in the Climate - Navigation on the Upper Rhine by Iffezheim is temporarily halted.
On Monday morning, the Neckar river's water levels are predicted to rise in Heidelberg, a city that experiences a flood about every five to ten years. If the water reaches 7.60 meters in Mannheim, boat traffic may be disrupted in a large area of the river.
An expert suggests that other rivers and streams in Baden-Württemberg could swell rapidly and significantly on Sunday. Areas especially vulnerable to heavy rainfall locally are at risk, including those near the Neckar and Tauber rivers. On Sunday, thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected to continue. The HVZ spokesperson warns that the effects of flooding on these smaller and medium-sized rivers could be catastrophic for the local regions.
As early as Monday morning, the HVZ forecasts a potential increase in the upper Donau and Bodensee tributaries. They anticipate that the flood situation in the area will deteriorate even further.

On Sunday, intense storms were forecasted to hit the Upper Rhine region in Baden-Württemberg, potentially causing the Rhine to overflow at Iffezheim. This could significantly disrupt shipping traffic in Rastatt and Karlsruhe. On the same day, the Neckar and Tauber rivers, which flow through Heidelberg and Mannheim, were also expected to swell, increasing the risk of flooding. The climate change-induced heavier rainfalls could exacerbate this situation. If the Rhine reaches 7.60 meters in Mannheim on Monday, boat traffic might be suspended over a broad area of the river. Local areas around the Neckar and Tauber rivers, such as Germersheim, are particularly susceptible to these heavy rainfalls and should prepare accordingly. The weather forecast predicted continuous thunderstorms and heavy rain for the weekend, further complicating the flood situation.
