NATO mission - Naval vessel "Frankfurt am Main" returns
The German naval vessel "Frankfurt am Main" is back in Wilhelmshaven after five months in the Mediterranean. The so-called task force provider with more than 100 soldiers on board arrived in its home port on Friday morning. Due to the war in Gaza, the ship had remained in the area of operations longer than planned after the end of a NATO mission in order to be able to assist with a possible evacuation of German citizens.
The crew is now back in time for Christmas and the New Year and is looking forward to spending time with their families, the navy announced earlier. Many friends and family members greeted the returning servicemen and women at the pier of the naval base.
In July, the warship had initially set sail on the "NATO Support ÄGÄIS" mission to monitor the sea area in the Aegean Sea between Greece and Turkey against human smuggling. The Western defense alliance NATO permanently maintains a task force of four to seven ships in the Aegean Sea.
"Due to the terrible events in Israel, we had to prepare for a possible military evacuation operation," said the commander of the task force supply ship, Hanno Weisensee, in a statement. "This demanded a lot from the crew once again shortly before the planned end of the mission in the Aegean. However, the entire crew mastered this new challenge in a highly professional and very successful manner."
