NATO countries launch 40 billion euros for Ukraine

The NATO countries have initiated new aid for Ukraine amounting to 40 billion euros. The heads of state and government want to decide on the pledge at their summit meeting in Washington next week, according to diplomatic circles in Brussels on Wednesday. The funds are to flow within the next year.

The member states reportedly agreed on a "fair burden sharing" among the allies regarding the package. However, they did not specify in detail which NATO country should contribute how much to it. Starting from the NATO summit in The Hague, Netherlands, next year, it will be annually reviewed whether and to what extent new aid is necessary.

According to diplomats, the US expressed concerns about committing to support beyond the presidential election in early November. Donald Trump, Biden's challenger, is one of the most vocal critics of military aid for Kiev.

Diplomats also stated that Turkey and other countries prevented the distribution key for the aid from being applied, which is based on the economic capabilities of the member states. According to this, Germany and the US would each contribute around 16% of the total sum, which is approximately 6.5 billion Euros.

Hungary is not involved: The Hungarian government, led by Viktor Orban, obtained an exception from any military or financial support for Ukraine from NATO. Orban made this a condition before giving his approval to Mark Rutte from the Netherlands as Stoltenberg's successor.

  1. The agreed-upon package for Ukraine's support is expected to be reviewed annually starting from the NATO summit in The Hague in 202x, considering if and how much additional aid is necessary.
  2. The US presidential election in early November 202x has raised concerns among NATO member states about making a long-term commitment to supporting Ukraine financially.
  3. Based on the economic capabilities of the member states, Germany and the US are projected to contribute approximately 16% each to the 6.5 billion Euro package, totalling around 1 billion Euros each.
  4. Despite the reported agreement on fair burden sharing, specific details on which NATO country should contribute how much to the package remain unspecified.
  5. At the NATO summit in The Hague, the scope of the aid package, including its cost and the commitment of each member state, will be officially discussed and decided upon.
  6. Turkey and other NATO countries have reportedly prevented the distribution key for the aid package from being applied, which is based on the economic capabilities of the member states.
