National player Magull: Captaincy was a burden

Lina Magull is a leading player - in the national team and at FC Bayern. She wore the captain's armband at her club. However, this honor was too much of a burden for her in the long run.

National player Magull: Captaincy was a burden

National soccer player Lina Magull has given up her captaincy at FC Bayern Munich, partly for reasons of stress. The 29-year-old told the news portal "t-online" in an interview on Thursday that the decision had already been made at the end of last season, which was not easy for her. "The season demanded a lot from me and the job was stressful for me in a certain way. With this decision, I wanted to allow myself to focus more on myself again," explained the attacking player. Shortly before the start of the season, Magull returned the captain's armband, saying she wanted to continue to lead the way without it.

The 75-time international also commented on the criticism of her after the disastrous World Cup and the uncertainty surrounding her participation in the Olympics. "Overall, we didn't perform well as a team. I felt it was a bit unfair to pin it partly on individual players," she said. Under interim national coach Horst Hrubesch, Magull now wants to get back into the DFB team after missing the international matches in October due to injury. She hopes to be on the pitch for the immensely important match against Denmark on December 1. A win with a two-goal difference would give the DFB team a very good chance of reaching the play-offs for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Magull, being part of the German National team and previously the captain of FC Bayern Munich's women's soccer team, is looking forward to potentially representing her country again. Despite her past role as captain at Bayern Munich, she opted to focus on herself due to the demanding nature of the position and the stress it brought.
