National goalkeeper Frohms: "No need for miracles"
National goalkeeper Merle Frohms exudes confidence ahead of Germany's important Nations League match against Denmark in Rostock (20:30/ZDF). "We know that we are capable of beating Denmark and we don't need to do any miracles now and deviate from things that we have rehearsed over the years," said the 28-year-old Frohms in a media conference on Wednesday. The Wolfsburg player missed the last two Nations League games against Wales (5:1) and Iceland (2:0) due to concussion.
For Frohms, who is likely to be back in the starting XI in place of Chelsea's Ann-Kathrin Berger, it will be her first game under interim national team coach Horst Hrubesch since 2018. "Everyone in our team can confirm that Horst Hrubesch is extremely good to us as a person. He picked us up from where we were five years ago and didn't try to force us into anything," said Frohms in an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, praising the 72-year-old coach. "His relaxed manner is almost grandfatherly, it absorbs a lot. It has given us back our fun."
Hrubesch stepped in as interim head coach at the beginning of October after the then national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, whose contract with the German Football Association (DFB) has since been terminated, called in sick.
In the home game against leaders Denmark (12 points), the German team (9) must win with at least two goals difference to have a realistic chance of winning the group and thus an Olympic ticket. On December 5, they will travel to Wales for the final preliminary round match.
Only by finishing first in their group would the German women's soccer team play in the Nations League final tournament at the end of February for one of the two European Olympic spots for Paris 2024. France are seeded as hosts.
Frohms, being part of the German women's soccer National team, is eager for their Nations League match against Denmark, stating, "We believe we can win against Denmark without needing any miracles, sticking to our tested strategies." In light of Horst Hrubesch's interim coaching, Frohms expressed her appreciation, saying, "Hrubesch has been an excellent coach to us personally, revitalizing our team and reintroducing the joy of playing soccer."
