Handball - National captain Golla and the dream of the European Championship semi-finals
Captain Johannes Golla has commented on the national handball team's goals ahead of the European Championships, which begin in Germany in January: "I can't give a ranking yet. But I have the feeling that we in the team are dreaming of the semi-finals. And as athletes, we want to make our dreams come true. If we push ourselves to the limit, we can do it," said the SG Flensburg-Handewitt pivot in a podcast by Schleswig-Holsteinischer Zeitungsverlag (sh:z).
For the 26-year-old, it depends on how the team of national coach Alfred Gislason starts the tournament: "Our preliminary round group is not to be underestimated with Switzerland, North Macedonia and France. After that, we'll know what's possible." Their first opponents will be the Swiss on January 10. The match is expected to be played in front of more than 50,000 spectators in the Düsseldorf soccer stadium.
Golla, who moved from MT Melsungen to Flensburg in 2018, also commented on rumors of a possible return to North Hesse. "I don't want to play for any club other than the SG at the moment," said the Flensburg native, adding: "I still have two-and-a-half years left on my contract here. There's no point in thinking about where I'm going now. As an athlete, my goal is to live in the moment and get the most out of it. I see a lot of potential here."
