Gallop Derby - Narrativo is the favorite in the 155th German derby
At the racecourse in Hamburg-Horn, the German Derby will be decided on Sunday for the 155th time. Twenty horses will start in the race with a purse of 650,000 Euro for the coveted Blue Ribbon. This is the maximum number of participants on the 2400 meter long track. The race is scheduled to start at 15.45 hours.
Narrativo, ridden by jockey Bauyrzhan Murzabayev, is favored to win in the race. The stallion is trained by Peter Schiergen in Cologne for the Ittlingen Stud. For Schiergen, it would be the sixth Derby win, for Ittlingen the fourth. The stud also has another promising horse at the start with René Piechulek riding Alleno. Both have been among the favorites in the betting markets for weeks.
The Lucky Owner stable, owned by Klaus Hofmann from Frankfurt, is represented twice. Waldemar Hickst trains Augustus and Wintertraum in Cologne. Neither Hofmann nor Hickst have won the crown of German horse racing yet. At the 155th Derby edition, their chances of a first success are better than ever.
Two women challenge the male jockey competition
Eight-time Derby winner Andrasch Starke, Germany's most successful jockey, will ride Borna. The Krefeld stable of Markus Klug owns the horse, who recently won the Derby Italiano in Rome and is aiming for a Derby double. Anna van den Troost and Sibylle Vogt, two women, will ride against the male jockey competition. They will start with the outsiders Geminiano and Lahzar Star.
A mare from the Roettgen Stud is among the starters. She is a sister of the Derby winners Windstoss (winner in 2017) and Weltstar (2018) and has prominent role models in her own family.
