German national team coach Julian Nagelsmann will nominate the first national team squad after the European Football Championship at the end of the month. The squad for the start of the new Nations League season is likely to provide the first insights into which players the 37-year-old is considering for the 2026 World Cup.
Midfielder Toni Kroos (34) ended his successful career after the 1:2 defeat in extra time in the quarter-finals against the eventual champions Spain. Thomas Müller, 34, announced his retirement from the DFB team a few days after the home tournament. The offensive player will only play for FC Bayern Munich in the future.
Neuer's decision pending
Germany's record goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, the third 2014 World Cup winner, is still keeping his future with the DFB team open. "It's not yet the time for me to announce anything or say how it will continue. There are still a few talks to be had," Neuer said recently on the FC Bayern Munich trip to South Korea in Seoul. Nagelsmann might now be the one to make a move. It's possible that the German national team will start the first international matches without the long-standing captain Neuer.
The coach had ruled out another major personnel change after the EM exit. "It doesn't make sense to completely shake up the squad. We have a large contingent that can still play at the World Cup," Nagelsmann said. He will only make minor changes and further rejuvenate the team in the next international matches. Nagelsmann is still planning with Ilkay Gündogan (33) from FC Barcelona as captain.
Nations League start against Hungary and Holland
Nagelsmann will gather the national team at Adidas' home ground in Herzogenaurach on Monday, September 2, according to DFB information. The team was also based there during the EM. The squad will be announced the week before, the DFB announced.
In the Nations League, the German team in the top league will face EM group opponent Hungary in Düsseldorf on September 6. Three days later, there will be a top match in Amsterdam against the Netherlands. The other group opponent is Bosnia and Herzegovina.
