National squad's performance - Nagelsmann refuses to leave Sane out of the European Championship team.
Julian Nagelsmann initiates the preparation for the home Euro championship with great enthusiasm. Nonetheless, there are several doubts regarding the fitness of a few national football players included in the preliminary 27-man squad, most notably Leroy Sane.
The 28-year-old Bayern attacker, known for his speed and agility, got limited and painful playing time in Munich due to his recurring hip troubles. Likewise, his club teammate, Jamal Musiala, struggled due to a knee tendon irritation. They last played together in the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid. Both have since been given time to rest and recover for the Euros.
"Musiala is doing well"
The potential debut of these players could be as early as the first DFB team training on Monday afternoon in front of 15,000 spectators in Jena. Will they be on the pitch? National coach Julian Nagelsmann is wondering too. With his insider knowledge, he knows the entire situation. "I know the pressure they experienced in recent weeks. I know when they played and why, I know it all," he recently mentioned. "I think Jamal has been handled quite well, but..." Nagelsmann trailed off regarding Sané.
Possible inclusion of Leroy Sané
"Leroy has discomforting hip issues. He may not be fully involved in every training, and that's not easy to predict," Nagelsmann described Sané's situation. While Nagelsmann is not ruling out the inclusion of Sané, he is not willing to risk an 11th-hour replacement.
Excellent attributes of Leroy Sané
"The player possesses unique skills in the offensive position that I don't want to miss out on," Nagelsmann elaborated on Sané's value. When healthy, Sane can turn a game with his scoring and assisting abilities.
Sane was excluded from the successful March friendlies against France and Holland due to suspension. He also missed the final Euro test game against Ukraine on June 3 in Nuremberg. Initially, he was slated to be a substitute in the attacking lineup.
Offensive quartet with Gündogan, Wirtz, Musiala, and Havertz
Captain Ilkay Gündogan, Florian Wirtz, Musiala, and Kai Havertz are the initial selections for the offensive spots. "We hope that Leroy is nearly pain-free," said Nagelsmann: "The doctor and Leroy himself are good people, but none of us are fortune tellers. Something could crop up during the tournament."
Adding Maximilian Beier to the roster
To address potential deficiencies, Nagelsmann has added Maximilian Beier (21) from Hoffenheim to the preliminary EM squad. He is an intriguing prospect and could potentially serve as a backup for players who might lack pace, like Sane.
