Criticism of cruises - Nabu: Climate targets of the cruise industry unacceptable

The Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (Nabu) criticizes the climate goals of several cruise ship companies. "It is irresponsible for an industry to set goals for itself that fall behind the climate goals of the Federal Republic," said Nabu transport expert Sönke Diesener. According to Nabu, eight of the twelve cruise ship companies surveyed stated that they want to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. "That is neither acceptable nor feasible – especially for a leisure activity," said Diesener. A total of 14 companies were surveyed, two did not respond.

Climate neutrality means that the climate is not influenced. The German government aims to achieve greenhouse gas neutrality in Germany by 2045.

  1. The Cruise Industry in Germany is under scrutiny by organizations like the Cruise Companies Associations and the Nature Conservation Association Germany (NABU), particularly in light of their climate targets.
  2. Sönke Diesener, a transport expert from NABU, has expressed his concern about the climate goals set by several cruise ship companies, stating they are insufficient compared to the climate targets of Germany.
  3. The Cruise Companies Associations have mentioned their aim to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, according to the research conducted by the Nature Conservation Association Germany.
  4. However, Sönke Diesener of NABU deems this target neither acceptable nor feasible, especially for the Cruise industry, which contributes to environmental pollution through Shipping.
  5. In response to criticism, the Cruise companies are trying to minimize their carbon footprint and align with Germany's climate target, which aims for greenhouse gas neutrality by 2045.
  6. Despite the efforts of eight out of twelve cruise ship companies surveyed by NABU, achieving climate neutrality by 2050 remains a significant challenge for the Cruise industry due to its reliance on fossil fuels for propulsion.
  7. The Hamburg-based NABU calls on the Cruise Companies Associations to take more aggressive action to reduce their environmental impact, promoting innovative technologies and sustainable practices in the Cruise industry to reach climate neutrality by 2050.
